No more view from home

I started this blog in January 2003, nearly 5 years ago. Originally, it was a way to get through the insanity of doing a complete remodel of our house, hence the name “A View from Home.” I had been running a home-based business called “Mom at Home Design” so it all fit together.

A lot has changed.

First of all, I am no longer maintaining the business name. My income now comes from just two sources, and I’m not pursuing freelancing work. It made more sense to simplify the paperwork.

Second, recent events have shown that I can never blog about my children again. This isn’t a Mommy blog by any stretch, but from time to time I did post about what was going on with my kids. Like many, I use blogging as a way of exploring a topic or thinking out loud. Sometimes I got it right, sometimes I didn’t. Sometimes, I blogged emphatically about a subject when in fact I was just trying to convince myself. That’s life. As part of a legal dispute I’m now dealing with (which I absolutely will not talk about), words I wrote here a year and a half ago were taken out of context, twisted and used against me. It wasn’t about me, it was about my child. I can’t handle the thought of my blog being used that way ever again.

I’m still debating whether or not to leave the existing “kids” category for the archives. Regardless, I know that I will not be adding any more entries to it.

I do enjoy blogging about politics, technology and the like and will continue to do so. It’s a release, and I love being a part of the bigger conversation. I can say things here that I can’t post on Web Worker Daily, even on similar subjects. Over the last few weeks, I’ve found that I come here to blog, I see “A View from Home,” and I freeze up. I’ve never been afraid of criticism, or being told I’m wrong. I publish every legitimate comment, good or bad. If you want to challenge my political views or how I feel about technology, bring it on. Leave my family out of it. It got too close, and after being burned I suddenly had fear of fire.

So…it’s time for a change of direction. If you read my blog because I post on tech, general news, nonpprofit and advocacy topics with a bit of a personal “how I use it” touch, then stick around. I want to do much more of that. I’ll be changing the theme and blog name to remove the “home” references. The URL will stay at momathome.com for now. I also own judisohn.com and I’m considering a transition. momathome.com has been “me” for almost 10 years, it’s not as easy to let that go.

One day at a time.
