If you’re reading this and the domain is momathome.com and not ss89.shared.server-system.net, then the name server change has gone through and hasta la vista Dreamhost. (thanks, Erik 😉 )
Let me know via comments here if anything seems funky. It will take a couple of days to shake out problems.

wel… im on ss92 😛
mmm they are growing quickly than i thought
Well, you convinced me! I’m now on MediaTemple with my two domains. I like the fact that they’re using Linux/Unix servers. It makes me feel more confident that they’ll be less susceptible to all of the viruses/trojans/malware/spyware which is so prevalent on Windows systems.
I also had good experience with their tech support (Frank).
Hey Jeff!! Great to see you here!
You did put momathome.com as the referring domain when you signed up, right? 😉
Actually, I’ve been getting your (rss) feed for a little while. It shows up in my “news ticker” (links from various sites which I’m interested in) at the bottom of my screen.
As for the referral, of course I mentioned you! 🙂 Although, I still don’t know what you get (but I’m interested, (tell me, tell me) ).
Setup was fairly straight forward, as I already had the domain names. Although, I asked about the number of nameservers which (mt) has; only two. Coming from DynDNS.org, it seemed small. DynDNS has 5 geographically dispersed name servers. (mt) has two, and, from what I was able to gather, they are in the same city. If something happens to one, the remaining one will have to handle all name traffic; and if they’re in the same city and, I don’t know, an earthquake happens, it may take out both of them. This isn’t a major concern, but it was something which made me pause for a sec.
It took me a little bit of reading to understand (technically) how they allow for multiple domains on one account (and their whole account/domains/subdomains/alt. domains setup) and everything, but it seemed nice.
I like the fact that I can just open up (log in) to my web space in Konqueror and just copy from a local dir. to the other window, which is my web space. All over a secure channel (SSH). COOL!
For every referral, I get the first month’s worth of hosting kicked back to me after they’ve been with (mt) for 2 months…so thank you. After 5 referrals, I qualify for ongoing discounts…so if you’re reading this and you want to give (mt) a try please don’t forget to put momathome.com in the referring domain field!
Anyway, every hosting company I’ve been with has had 2, maybe 3 DNS servers. It hasn’t concerned me. After 8 years of having my own domain, I can say that the last thing that’s a problem is the nameserver. It’s usually a software/hardware glitch that the files are on that causes things to go south, in which case having nameservers all over the country won’t make a lick of difference.
I hear you about the multiple domain thing. I have been trying to figure out what to do with Eric’s site, which is currently on Dreamhost. I could have added 9to5andotherwise.com as an alternate domain on my account, but in the end I decided to sign him up for his own account so he wouldn’t have to share my cgi-bin and space.
Which reminds me, we have to move SCOPES since I want to shut down my Dreamhost account. Can you take it under your (mt) account? Let’s talk via email, okay? I just renewed the domain for another year.
I just found you because your old index.rdf file went 404 on me, so I had to re-check and change the feed I was using. The index.rdf file was still working, but must have been lost in the move. Perhaps you had it symlinked or something.
Mediatemple sucks guys. Just joined the grid server and MYSQL connection is a pain. My website is down atleast once every day for some time. Usually 10 to 15 minutes. Just wait for their system to become stable before you move.

Did you contact support, Sandy? I started having MySQL issues today, and heard a response back quickly. Here is an explanation of the issues they’re having with MySQL right now:

(mt) Media Temple Operations
MySQL Connection Errors
We are currently experiencing periodic and intermittent issues involving connectivity from customer applicatoins to MySQL. (mt) Media Temple engineers are aware of this issue and are actively working on a resolution. We are additionally monitoring all systems in order to correct any issues that arise as soon as they appear. We thank you for your patience as we investigate the situation and work towards a resolution.

MySQL Connection Errors
We have added additional hardware resources to our MySQL infrastructure. Additionaly, new monitoring tools have been put in place to mitigate some negative effects of connetions that do not time out properly. Since these adjustments we have not observed any additional systemic connection issues. However, we are continuing to monitor the system to make sure that customers are receiving a proper level of service. Thank you again for your patience as we continue to observe this.
Hi Judy, I did contact them and have been doing that since last 3 weeks. I think that it is something they are working on hard to resolve, let’s see how long it takes to fix up the issue.
By the way for the last 2 days I have not been facing any downtime and all seems to be working great.

Sandy, funny it was better for you the last 2 days, but I first had the problem yesterday.
All hosts have problems and downtime. If they say they don’t, they’re lying. So I don’t judge a host based on the problems they have, I judge them based on how they communicate with their customers when they have them and how the issue is resolved.
So far, still no complaints about (mt). Dreamhost wouldn’t have responded until the problem was over. I got an answer within minutes that explained the issue and what they were doing to correct it. And then it was fixed. Couldn’t ask for more.
Hi,
I have a website hosted on the grid server in media temple and I am still experiencing the same issue (mysql connection errors and timeouts). Do you guys still have the same issue?
Thanks.
Wedge
No, my site and email have been quite stable the last week or so, ::knock on wood::
Log into (mt) and open a new support request..the current issues are listed there. Or call and ask, they’re pretty good about answering those questions over the phone.
Still having mysql connection issues here (or just VERRRYYY slow mysql response times). Each week days will pass by and I think – Oh it seems OK, I won’t have to change hosts *fingers crossed*, then a day of slow response or timeouts will creep back again.
Its been months with these issues. I hate switching hosts, but may have to. What hosting company is better for high traffic/busy database sites? (heard average reports about dreamhost)
