FTPeel

I’ve been a registered user of Panic’s Transmit for all my FTP’ing needs for a while now. It has some great features, such as the ability to edit and preview a file right from the window. However, recently Erik Barzeski of Freshly Squeezed Software and I were having a chat and he pointed out to me that his application, FTPeel was recently updated. I gave it a try and it’s pretty sweet (no pun intended). I can’t see using it instead of Transmit at this point, but it has one major feature that Transmit does not that I’ve found pretty handy. They call it “MagicMirror.” What that means is that after you set it up, you can drag a file (or multiple files) to the dock icon and it will upload to your site in the exact same position in your site’s hierarchy as it is on your local drive. This is a nice time-saver over Transmit which requires you to drill up/down the remote hierarchy before uploading when the complete “synchronization” routine is overkill to upload just a few changed files. Dreamweaver does this in it’s site window, but when I’m just adding a picture to the blog pages I have no need to be in Dreamweaver.

It’s got a nice interface too…you can see the structure of your site in columns view like in the OS X Finder (screenshot from the FTPeel site).

And I look at it this way…carpenters have hammers of all different sizes and for different purposes. Since I’m in and out of my online directories constantly throughout the day, FTPeel is a nice addition to my toolbox.
